Manila Contemporary

In the world of graphic design, Whitespace is the space between elements in composition. Fittingly sequestered in the Whitespace complex, Manila Contemporary creates a little more room in the local art scene, opening the door to Southeast Asia by exhibiting art from the whole region.

Paying attention to the fact that a number of contemporary artists often choose to make installation pieces and other large-scale works, gallerist Valetine Willy chose the chasmal 5.8 meter high and 300 square meter space that previously held the BMW showroom. With a wealth of space, one could easily feel oppressed by its expanse, yet Manila Contemporary finds a novel solution. “Valentine wanted to achieve a certain feel of intimacy that merely a cavernous space cannot provide. That is why we had three movable partitions made to have this feel and also to have the option of playing around more with the space,” explains Siddharta Perez of Manila Contemporary.

With sister galleries in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Yokyakarta, the inauguration of Manila Contemporary last December also conversely augers the opening of Southeast Asia’s doors to Manila artists. As part of the network of Valentine Willie Fine Art (VWFA) galleries, Manila Contemporary artists are also privy to VWFA’s circulation of artists around the region; group exhibitions with foreign and local artists are held regularly in each of his galleries, and residencies are offered for artists. Through cross-pollinating activities such as these, the region truly embodies syncretism, opening itself to new ideas and creating intersections of mutual understanding.
